Australian Hearts, French Elegance: A Château de Flaugergues Wedding

Alix&Alex@Versatile-239-1

When most people imagine a destination wedding in France, they often picture grand celebrations with hundreds of guests, sprawling château grounds, and days of festivities. While those weddings certainly have their place, there is something incredibly special about a smaller celebration where every guest is part of the couple’s closest circle and every moment feels deeply personal.

That was exactly the atmosphere when Alix and Alex traveled all the way from Australia to celebrate their wedding at the magnificent Château de Flaugergues in Montpellier.  With just sixteen guests in attendance, their wedding was intimate, elegant, relaxed, and unmistakably French—a perfect reflection of who they are as a couple.

As a destination wedding planner in France, these are often my favourite celebrations to produce. Smaller weddings allow couples to focus on what truly matters: meaningful conversations, exceptional food and wine, beautiful surroundings, and quality time with the people they love most.

And Château de Flaugergues provided the perfect backdrop for exactly that.

A Historic Château in the Heart of Montpellier

One of the things that makes Château de Flaugergues so unique is its location. Unlike many French wedding venues that require guests to travel deep into the countryside, Château de Flaugergues sits right within the city of Montpellier. Often referred to as one of the “Folies de Montpellier,” the estate dates back to the late seventeenth century and remains one of the region’s most beautiful historic properties. Scattered around the outskirts of Montpellier, the city’s celebrated Folies are a remarkable collection of aristocratic châteaux and country estates dating primarily from the 18th century. Built as lavish summer residences by Montpellier’s wealthy elite, they resemble the grand English country house tradition far more than the ornamental follies their name might suggest. Today, they remain enduring symbols of the city’s wealth, culture, and architectural heritage.

The moment guests arrive, they are greeted by elegant stone architecture, manicured French gardens, towering cypress trees, and a remarkable collection of Mediterranean and exotic plants. Walking through the grounds feels like stepping into another era.

For Alix and Alex, the venue offered exactly the combination they were looking for: historic French charm without sacrificing convenience for their traveling guests. Their friends and family had journeyed from Australia to France, and the château provided an opportunity to experience the romance of a French estate while remaining close to Montpellier’s hotels, restaurants, and transport connections.

A Beautiful Ceremony in Front of the Orangerie

The ceremony itself took place in front of the château’s historic l’orangerie. Framed by elegant French doors covered in climbing pale-pink roses and surrounded by lush palms and cypress trees, the setting felt effortlessly romantic. There was no need for elaborate décor; nature and history had already done the work.  Rows of chairs were carefully arranged on the lawn while the late afternoon sunshine illuminated the façade of the orangerie.

As guests took their seats, there was a sense of anticipation and excitement. With such a small guest list, everyone present had played an important role in the couple’s lives and journey together.  Those are often the most emotional ceremonies because every face in the audience carries a story.

When Alix and Alex walked together through the gardens and then down the aisle, there was an immediate sense that this was going to be a wedding filled with genuine emotion rather than formality.

The intimacy of the setting allowed every guest to feel connected to the moment.

A Bride with Remarkable Style

One of the standout details of the day was undoubtedly Alix’s wedding attire.  Rather than choosing a traditional bridal gown, she selected an extraordinary embroidered dress that perfectly reflected her personality and the joyful spirit of the celebration.

The gown featured intricate floral embroidery in shades of pink, lavender, soft green, and ivory, with delicate bead work catching the sunlight throughout the day. The design felt romantic, artistic, and completely unique.  Paired with a soft green shawl and an elegant bouquet of blush and ivory flowers, the look was sophisticated while remaining wonderfully personal.  It was a reminder that modern brides are increasingly choosing wedding fashion that tells their own story rather than following convention.

Alix’s bouquet complemented the gown beautifully, featuring soft pink blooms, white flowers, delicate greenery, and trailing ivy that created movement and texture.  Together, the bouquet and dress looked as though they belonged in the château gardens themselves.

Relaxed Elegance for the Groom

Alex’s attire was equally well suited to the occasion.  For a spring wedding in the South of France, he selected a beautifully tailored beige linen suit paired with a pale pink shirt and floral pocket square.  The look perfectly captured the relaxed sophistication that destination weddings in France are known for.

Linen remains one of my favourite choices for grooms marrying in Southern France. It photographs beautifully, works exceptionally well in warm weather, and complements the natural tones of historic French architecture.  Alex’s boutonnière added a subtle floral detail that tied his look seamlessly into the overall design of the day.

Standing together in the château gardens, Alix and Alex looked effortlessly elegant and completely at ease.

Cocktails Among the Gardens

Following the ceremony, guests were invited to enjoy a cocktail reception within the château’s magnificent gardens.

This portion of the day was intentionally relaxed.

Champagne, refreshments, and a selection of wines produced by Château de Flaugergues itself were served beneath the shade of mature trees while guests explored the grounds, admired the gardens, and caught up with one another.

What many visitors don’t realize is that Château de Flaugergues is not only one of Montpellier’s most beautiful historic estates, but also a renowned wine-producing domaine with a winemaking history dating back centuries. Serving the château’s own wines allowed guests to experience another layer of the property’s heritage while enjoying the very vineyards that contribute to its reputation.

One of the great advantages of a small wedding is that couples can spend meaningful time with every guest. There is no rushing from table to table, no pressure to divide attention among hundreds of people. Instead, conversations flow naturally and everyone feels included in the experience.

The gardens of Château de Flaugergues provided the perfect setting for this. Palm trees, formal hedges, fountains, and spectacular views across the estate created endless opportunities for photographs while guests enjoyed the beautiful Montpellier weather.

For many of the Australian guests, it was their first opportunity to experience a historic French château and sample wines produced directly on the estate itself—a uniquely French experience that added another memorable element to an already extraordinary day.

Thoughtful Details at Dinner

As guests made their way to dinner, they were welcomed into Folia, the château’s renowned restaurant, for an exceptional culinary experience.

Nestled within the historic grounds of Château de Flaugergues, Folia has earned a reputation as one of Montpellier’s most celebrated dining destinations. Known for its creative cuisine, elegant presentation, and commitment to showcasing the finest seasonal ingredients from the region, it was the perfect setting for Alix and Alex’s intimate wedding dinner.

The restaurant’s atmosphere perfectly complemented the intimate nature of the wedding. Rather than a vast ballroom, guests gathered around a beautifully styled table where conversation, laughter, and heartfelt toasts flowed naturally throughout the evening.  The table itself was a reflection of the couple’s elegant yet relaxed style. A crisp silver tablecloth in a diamond pattern provided the canvas for the lush floral centrepiece overflowing with shades of coral, blush, ivory, crimson, and soft pink. Delicate glassware sparkled beneath the warm lighting, while the natural stone walls of the restaurant created an atmosphere that felt both refined and welcoming.

One detail I particularly enjoyed preparing for this wedding was the lotus-fold napkin presentation at each place setting.  Every guest arrived to find a carefully folded linen napkin shaped into a lotus flower resting atop their plate. The soft lavender and pale blue tones of the napkins complemented the floral palette beautifully while adding an additional layer of refinement to the tablescape. While seemingly simple, details like this contribute enormously to the guest experience. They demonstrate care, thoughtfulness, and attention to detail—qualities that define truly memorable celebrations.

French weddings are often remembered for their food, and this evening was no exception.  The couple selected an elegant bespoke four-course menu, thoughtfully crafted by the Folia culinary team to reflect both the sophistication of the venue and the relaxed atmosphere of the celebration. Each course showcased the exceptional quality of southern French gastronomy while highlighting seasonal ingredients and refined presentation.

The culinary experience began with an impressive collection of amuse-bouches that encouraged guests to sample a variety of flavours while continuing conversations around the table. Delicate octopus salad sat alongside herring with potatoes in oil, pickled red onions, and a horseradish espuma. A fresh pea salad with egg mimosa and mustard pickles brought bright spring flavours to the menu, while feta and olive cake, cream cheese and arugula wraps, and tapenade served with colourful raw vegetable crudités completed a generous and beautifully presented selection.

For the starter, guests enjoyed a perfectly cooked soft-boiled egg accompanied by a vibrant salad of beetroot, bell pepper, and samphire. The dish was both elegant and refreshing, celebrating the freshness of the season while providing a perfect transition into the main course.

The principal course featured expertly prepared pressed lamb served with a spring vegetable jardinière. The tender lamb paired beautifully with the colourful assortment of seasonal vegetables, creating a dish that felt both comforting and refined. In a thoughtful reflection of the couple’s personal tastes, the bride enjoyed a separate vegetarian main course of creamy gnocchi, proving that vegetarian cuisine can be every bit as indulgent and satisfying as its traditional counterpart.

As is tradition in France, dinner continued with a carefully curated cheese course, allowing guests to savour some of the country’s most celebrated culinary treasures while enjoying local wines from the château’s own renowned domaine. The evening concluded with a dessert that was as beautiful as it was delicious. A delicate pavlova was paired with a vibrant red berry sorbet and finished with pieces of fresh strawberries. Light, refreshing, and full of flavour, it provided the perfect ending to an exceptional meal.

With only sixteen guests gathered around the table, dinner felt less like a formal wedding reception and more like an elegant private dinner party hosted in one of Montpellier’s most remarkable settings. Conversations flowed effortlessly, glasses were raised in celebration, and every guest had the opportunity to enjoy not only outstanding cuisine but also the warmth and intimacy that made this wedding so special.

Stunning Floral Design

The floral arrangements were another highlight of the reception.

For this wedding, I turned to one of my trusted floral partners, Fatima of Aura Flor Hélène Jean, whose boutique is located within the renowned Les Halles de Castellane in Marseille. Fatima has an exceptional eye for colour, texture, and composition, making her one of my favourite florists to collaborate with for intimate destination weddings in the South of France.

The centrepieces featured a vibrant mix of coral, blush, pink, ivory, and crimson blooms accented with flowing greenery and trailing ivy. The arrangements felt lush and abundant while remaining perfectly scaled for the intimate dinner setting.  Against the backdrop of natural stone walls, elegant table linens, and the refined atmosphere of Folia, the flowers introduced warmth, texture, and colour without overwhelming the space.  The result was refined yet welcoming—exactly the atmosphere Alix and Alex wanted to create for their guests.

One of the advantages of working with talented local artisans such as Fatima is the ability to create designs that feel organic to the venue itself. The floral palette echoed both the colours found within Alix’s remarkable embroidered gown and the soft pink climbing roses surrounding the château’s historic orangerie, helping to create a seamless visual story throughout the day.

As daylight gradually faded and candles flickered across the table, the flowers helped transform the dining space into something truly magical—a fitting conclusion to an elegant French celebration shared among family and friends.

Capturing Every Moment

No wedding story would be complete without mentioning the person responsible for preserving these memories so beautifully: photographer and videographer Gregory Lockner of Versatile Productions.

Having now worked alongside Gregory on multiple weddings throughout the South of France, I can confidently say that he is one of the most talented photographers in the region. What I appreciate most about his work is his ability to capture genuine moments as they unfold naturally. Rather than forcing poses or interrupting the flow of the day, Gregory has an exceptional talent for blending into the background and documenting authentic emotions, spontaneous laughter, quiet exchanges, and all of the small details that couples often miss in the moment. His creative approach focuses on creating images that are both artistic and emotional, something that is clearly evident throughout Alix and Alex’s wedding gallery.

Whether photographing the emotion of the ceremony in front of the orangerie, the golden afternoon light in the château gardens, the intricate embroidery of Alix’s dress, or the intimate atmosphere of dinner at Folia, Gregory’s photographs tell the complete story of the day. It is always a pleasure to collaborate with professionals who understand that wedding photography is about much more than taking beautiful pictures—it’s about preserving memories and emotions that couples will treasure for the rest of their lives.

The Beauty of Small Destination Weddings

This wedding served as a wonderful reminder that luxury is not necessarily about scale.

Luxury is about experience.  It is about gathering the people who matter most, transporting them to a beautiful place, and creating moments they will remember forever.  With only sixteen guests, Alix and Alex were able to focus on every aspect of their guests’ experience while still enjoying their own wedding day.

There was no stress, no rushing, and no overwhelming schedule.  Instead, there was exceptional food, meaningful conversations, beautiful surroundings, and countless moments of connection.  Those are often the celebrations that remain in people’s memories long after the wedding is over.
